DAY ONE
I wanted to get an early start as I had a long day of driving ahead. I had set my alarm for 6:00am but the alarm never went off. Fortunately, I woke up a few minutes earlier as nature was calling and that's when I realized the power was off and the alarm on my clock radio never would have gone off. I threw on my robe and went out to the shed and fired up my generator. God, I love that thing. Considering we get half a dozen power outages a year this generator is a life saver.
My plan was to drive down to Niagara Falls, New York where I have a parcel service that holds items I order on Amazon. It saves me a ton of cash but is a bit inconvenient at times. I had ordered a pair of tow mirrors for my truck that are much larger and stick out further than the stock mirrors so I can see down the sides of my RV.
Crossing the border is always a bit nerve-wracking but I am usually able to get through without incident. Aside from the long lines to just get up to the border patrol officer he had me pull over for an inspection. After about a half hour delay they confiscated my grapefruit and a handful of tangerines. They also asked me why I carried a very real looking air pistol and suggested I keep it hidden for some reason. I just told him I use it for target practice and besides it's quite intimidating from a self-defence perspective. Fortunately, it's legal to carry.
I had already booked my campground a week ago at a KOA (Kampgrounds of America) in Henderson, NY in the very scenic1000 Islands Region. I plugged the address into my GPS and it took me along a much slower paced route that skirted along the southern shore of Lake Ontario.
It was just after 6:00pm when I checked into my campground. It had been a very warm day that peaked out at 28'C (82.4'F) so I was tired and thirsty. That first vodka tonic sure went down smoothly. It's an amazingly refreshing drink in the summer. I didn't feel much like cooking so I munched on a couple of ham and cheese wraps that my dearest friend Penny had made for my journey.
There was still lots of sunlight so I spent the next hour installing my new tow mirrors. They were a bit tricky but eventually, I got them sorted. They will be very handy and will make the rest of my travels much safer.
Here are a couple of pics I took before the sun went down.
Lake Ontario is considerably higher this year due to a much larger snowpack last winter. As you can see several trees are in the water still and it's mid-July.
Tomorrow I cross back into Canada just east of Kingston, Ontario so I can visit my friends, Garry and Luanne, who I used to curl with.
